Wednesday, October 4, 1769 the day the exploring party, having already passed Monterey Bay without recognizing it from Vizcaino's 1602 description, held a special Mass to ask guidance on what to do next. Crespi: "We constructed an arbor in which to celebrate the holy sacrifice of the Mass, which we both said with all possible devotion... The Mass concluded, the commander summoned the officers..." Bolton's footnote to the Oct 3 entry (the day before) identifies the area as Carmel Bay and River. Geocoding to Point Pinos Lighthouse. Note this is a distinct mass from the one said by Serra under what is now known as the Serra-Vizcaino Oak.
