Recorded in Crespi's diary: "After we two priests had celebrated Mass with all the people present, we started about seven," a Sunday, before crossing the plain toward the valley Crespi named San Miguel Arcangel (the San Gabriel River). Crespi's own name for the camp was Santa Marta; Bolton's editorial footnote places it in La Brea Canyon, north of Fullerton, Orange County. Part of the same 1769 expedition already represented on the site by entries such as Castaic Junction and the Ventura mission site.
