Notes
Tuesday, August 15, 1769 diary entry, from Fray Juan Crespi's own journal of the Portola expedition (Herbert Eugene Bolton's 1927 English edition, "Fray Juan Crespi: Missionary Explorer on the Pacific Coast, 1769-1774"). Crespi writes: "We two priests said Mass, which everybody heard, and at two in the afternoon we set out, taking the road to the west along the edge of the sea..." Bolton's own footnote at this entry identifies the site explicitly: "On the site of Mission San Buenaventura, and of the City of Ventura." Sourced from my own research library (a scanned copy of the Bolton edition), not an online source.
