Notes
First Mass in Liberty County. Eastgate was known as the easternmost Czech settlement in Texas. Recognizing a severe lack of local sacraments, the Janacek family requested a priest. Father Mosler answered by traveling 375 miles by train from Bomarton in Baylor County to offer the first Mass to six local families. He continued making this massive trek four times a year until a permanent church structure was begun in 1918.
