first Mass in Goliad county. This liturgy marked a direct defensive response by Spain to counter French territorial expansion in the Gulf of Mexico. The Mass was intentionally celebrated directly on top of the ruined, razed foundations of Robert de La Salle’s failed French outpost, Fort Saint Louis, serving as a powerful symbolic reclamation of the territory for the Spanish Crown and the Catholic Church.
