Father Granger traveled across East Texas on horseback to celebrate this initial Mass. Two years later, the International and Great Northern Railroad donated land to construct the county's first wooden church structure. After that original building burned down in 1890, parishioners hand-baked 675,000 bricks directly on the property to construct the grand, historic Sacred Heart structure that still stands today.
