Before this milestone, the few Catholics scattered in the frontier village of Dallas had to travel hundreds of miles to Nacogdoches or Galveston to receive the sacraments. Father Augagneur traveled roughly 150 miles on horseback from his post in Nacogdoches to reach the village. Outside of the priest and the Guillot family, only two other local Catholics attended the historic service.
