Notes

Claimed to be the first Mass in modern-day Diocese of Tyler. The Celebrants: The Mass was led by Franciscan friar Father Damián Massanet and three fellow priests, accompanied by Spanish explorer Captain Alonso de León and 110 soldiers. The Ceremony: During the service, the Spanish flag was officially raised. The local Caddo chief was presented with a staff topped with a cross, legally naming him a governor under Spain after he committed to letting his tribe be instructed in the Catholic faith.
